Learnings from Paper Prototyping

Things I learned from user testing the paper prototype apple watch app of “We Eat”

  1. When first looking at the home screen, users were unclear that this is a “menu” and were not sure what the + icon does. Once tapping any of the menu items, all testers said “ahh” and understood right away that the homepage is a menu and what to expect in each section. While this was not entirely clear on first glass, I feel that this is a short learning curve that is worth the effort. A suggestion I received to help make this more clear was to add a small ‘>’ on the top bar of the “Today”.
  2. In the “Today” section on the home screen- as meals names can be longer than the space, cut the name with “…” to limit.
  3. The add a meal is missing information of the day and meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner) it will be added to. This should be added in an additional two screens- one for each action.
  4. In the vote on meal- add the day and meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner), maybe with a dash and meal icons or a color scheme?
  5. In the inner view of the vote on meal, perhaps the title is not necessary and can allow for more space to present the information in a clearer way emphasizing the day and meal  (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Updated design

Updated designs based on the feedback I received in class last week.

The first thing that I changed was emphasising the “meal plan” tab in the bottom bar navigation

A further update is the addition of the password field in the sign-up view. And changing the sign-up view to be seen contextually when selecting the “members” or “settings” tabs

Another update is located in the “add a meal” screen. In the meal name type area, I added an autocomplete which pulls from past meals

Things I learned from paper prototyping:

Added a current tab for the meal plan so that users know their location and have an easy way to get back

Share meal plan button look like a call to action and not a place to see who you are collaborating with – changed labeling to “members”

In meal plan, changed the first day to be current day. View show upcoming days only

#thursdayapps | Square Order for iOS

Square order for iOS lets you order food or coffee ahead of time from your favorite lunch spot or coffee bar. Using Bluetooth and geolocation, the restaurant/coffee shop is able to know when you’re nearby and can begin preparing your order before you’ve arrived. The payment is processed once you order, so when you reach the shop you don’t wait in line just grab you food or coffee and be on your way.

The app has delightful motion transition, uses fun illustrations and has great typographic hierarchy and copywriting making it easy to use.

Three things I learned from Apple’s human interface guidelines

Three things I learned from Apple’s human interface guidelines:

1. Always be prepared to stop– when we design we don’t always take this state/flow into account. Having Apple set guidelines and action steps to what to do in this case is super helpful.

2. Text that responds appropriately to changes the user makes to text-size settings– this is something that is important to take in account and test seeing how a different text setting effects the designs and make appropriate design/layout decisions for these cases.

3. Make sure your UI can handle the double-high status bar- this is definitely not something I would have thought of and super important to pay attention to cases where important UI elements may be covered.
