3 things I learned from Reading the HCI – by Claire

– “Defer to content”. The idea of prioritizing content above interface design or functionality. It’s a good ethos to adopt and remind yourself of when working through the design process.
– Using color not only to indicate the importance or name of a feature, but also it’s interactivity. I like how they suggest marrying design with functionality in such a basic way. It’s so simple but it makes a lot of sense. Also, this tip about selecting colors and color contrast is helpful:
“One way to discover areas that need higher contrast is to desaturate the UI and look at it in grayscale. If you have trouble telling the difference between interactive and noninteractive elements or backgrounds in the grayscale version, you probably need to increase the contrast between these elements.”
– The idea of “rewarding” users in some way when they mark a setting or input some data. I myself have felt annoyed/discouraged when I input a lot of information but feel like I’m not progressing through the app or able to use it yet.
– Striving for realism with animation.  Sometimes, as designers, there’s this urge to create a super innovative or fancy feature. It’s interesting to learn that simple and logical is best, and being TOO creative can actually lead to confusion.
Whoops, that’s 4. There’s so much in there!
