Week 1 Assignment – Gayle Schumacher
-
Selfie/Bio
Hi, I’m Gayle and I used to work as an architectural designer until I decided it wasn’t going to be for me in the long run. I love singing in a cappella groups, popcorn, and any show that Mike Schur has ever had a hand in creating.
2. What I learned from HIG
- Motion and animation can become accessibility issues and it’s possible for users to reduce the amount of motion present in an app. It’s best to avoid autoplaying motion-based parts of the app without also making sure there’s a button or some other way for users to control it.
- There’s a distinction between primary and secondary audio interruptions. Music, calls, podcasts, etc, all count as primary and your app should stop its sound indefinitely, while GPS, and other short interruptions, mean your app should lower volume or stop only until the interruption is over.
- Avoid overusing haptics. The best ones are those that don’t disrupt but would be missed by the user if they were gone.
3. App Concept
User: Anyone cooking for multiple people with disparate tastes.
What I’m doing: Providing a way to find recipes that fit multiple people’s taste quickly and easily.

Some thoughts from class that I think are worth reemphasizing:
– How can it be clear that you’re actively taking into account the needs of each person?
– Could you take any likes/favorites for each person to help point towards good dishes?
At least at the recipe level, should you also call out if a recipe is gluten free or has other allergens excluded? Could it call out how each person is accommodated by this recipe or call out particular ingredients that have been adapted to suit a person’s likes/dislikes/allergen needs?
I’m pretty sure you’re aware of this, but the profile currently only allows for one person to be set up. How can you allow for setting up a full family easily? How can you make it where you can ad hoc ad someone (e.g. weekend guest, dinner party guest) to accommodate their needs?
A default center tab is something that I’ve seen some apps play with, but it’s still non-standard, so make sure that you have a strong argument for why you want to not make the default tab the left-most one.
