Charlotte Böhning – Week 1
Hi! My name is Charlotte and I’m a rising senior at Georgetown University. I study economics, journalism and art history during the school year, but am really excited to learn about UI/UX this summer.
3 things I didn’t know before reading the HIG…
- I didn’t realize that the HIG uses metaphor in the context of design principles, which I found quite interesting. I discovered that people learn more quickly when an app’s virtual objects/actions “are metaphors for familiar experiences.”
- I knew nothing about the various forms of navigation, i.e. hierarchical nav. vs. flat nav. Vs. content-driven/experience-driven nav.
- Color consideration is quite important, especially when considering how use of your color might be perceived in other countries and cultures → HIG suggests that colors chosen send the appropriate/intended message in all anticipated contexts.
App Map:
User = people who are unimpressed by & wary of food reviews on Trip Advisor, Yelp & the like.
What I’m doing for them = providing them with a more trustworthy platform where they can view & track the findings of friends (who typically have similar tastes).

I think you can get away with requiring an account at first install in your app. You’ll probably want to consider a onboarding/first time use experience that gets you connected to some friends so that there is some content in your app.
The groups feature feels unnecessary to me. Do you think that your friend group inside of the app will be so vast that you’ll need to allow for self organization into groups? And/or could the groups be more fully integrated into the rest of the experience if they’re going to be there?
You should also consider how I keep connecting to friends in the future. In general is the model going to be a facebook two way friend street or a following model (e.g. Instagram, Twitter).
This came up in class, but allowing for photos, at least optionally, with feed posts seems reasonable. The feed you have is kind of Twitter-y, allowing for text and for photos, so maybe checking out some basic functionality there could be interesting.
I’m a little confused about what the sliders that indicate price/ambiance/menu are showing me. Perhaps a more straightforward scale could be easier to read.
Is the Discover tab just a map view that I can search in? What informs the restaurants that appear there? Places that my friends have posted about or things the whole community has posted about?
Make sure to look at your wires and designs on a device to ensure that all the text is readable and all the touchable items are spread out enough that they can be interacted with.
