For February 23, 2017

Digital Prototype: marvelapp.com/1e6jc9c

  1. Users want to see the calories progress directly, instead of just day by day.
  2. I hide the progress photo in the secondary page of profile, in order to protect privacy.
  3. Using new page for the Add page, instead of just temporary pop-up window.

  1. Great job, Karl. I really love your UI design, very impressive. Here are a few things you maybe want to look into more.
Let’s start from the Goal View in your “User Information Setup”. Although your visual design is great, I believe there are some parts you could push further. The combination of “Goal”,”Choose your own goal” and the thick white line is a little awkward. You maybe want to adjust their positions, and the distance between each other, and the font size. The thing is, the line in the middle is very thick. So for me, I saw the line in my first sight instead of the title. Also, why you are using the oval and triangle icons? Are their meanings matching to “gaining weight” and “losing weight”? Love your color patterns, but the arrow at the bottom is a little hard to see.

Personal Info View: The header looks more balanced than the previous one, maybe because the title is longer so that it can weaken the line. I noticed the lines under “male” and ”female” are different. Does this indicate different states? If so, that maybe a little subtle to show I have chosen the female. If not, I think your prototype could be more professional if you can show us the different states of the buttons, and what kind of keyboards you are using to for users to input their data as well.

1.0 – Diary: Very elegant design for this view, I must say! I appreciate how you design the tab bar. The icons are very clear and in the same style and same size. So are the icons for the adding new activities part, although the icon of “meal” looks a little thin. What does the number”1120” mean? It confused me a lot because I can not find a match to the numbers beneath it. Is it a date, or the calorie your have taken today? Or the remaining calorie you can take today?
I like your idea of using different colors to indicate different states. You may need to think further that how you can teach your users to know that. And are there only two backgrounds or is the background dynamic that changing gradually with the data?
I understand you want to use different colors to show the difference between the intake and burning calories. But for now, I can hardly notice the yellow color. Maybe you can try to use other methods, like using symbols “+”,”-” to help users to understand.

    1.3.2 Add exercise view:
I like you using pickers here to help users input their data, and again, the visual design is very nice. I notice that you don’t have a “finish” icon here. I think this is a place you can test about. From my perspective, “back” and “finish”, although the outcomes may be the same in your app, are quite different. One scenario is that I choose the time, and I want to finish my input and let the app remember the data. Another scenario is that I have imputed my data, but I want to discard my data somehow maybe because I can not remember them correctly. In these two scenarios, the user is using the back button both for remembering the data and the discarding data. So this may cause the problem. For users who have the expectation to have a finish button to confirm their input, they will don’t know where to tap.So this may be an important thing for you to think about.
For the view that the users have finished inputting all the data, the position of 860 cals is a little awkward. Which part is more important in this process of adding activities, the final calories calculated by the app, or the data the users have inputted? Either way, the position now can not meet the expectation.

    2.0 Progress View:
When you put the month as tabs above, you may need to think about how to tell users which year it is.
What does the white triangle mean? Today, or the date I choose. If is it the date I want to check, then how can I know which day it is? How do I choose another day? Swipe or tap? Also, you may need to think about what happens if there is not enough data in a month to draw a curve.
I am not sure about using several white lines together here, it feels like the line is jumping.

Overall, this is an excellent project. I hope my feedback can help you make it better. If you want to discuss it more or if you have any questions, if you are not sure about what I mean(sorry for my English), you can reach out to me through my email and WeChat.

BTW, you can go to the setting of your marvel project, to choose which device you want to put your design in.

Can’t wait to see your presentation on Thursday!
